Despite having 'good' diets, brushing twice a day, and not having access to the sweetie jar, some parents find out that their children still have 𝙘𝙖𝙫𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨. Why?!
Here are five possible hidden culprits:
𝗔𝗹𝗹-𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗦𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 🧃
Sipping on anything from sports drinks to fruit juice to Aquarius, over several hours while studying or gaming, keeps teeth in a constant enamel-destroying bath.
'𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆' 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝘀 🥨
Snacking between meals on pretzels, potato crisps, etc, packs starch deep into grooves of molars and breaks down into sugar which feeds cavity-causing bacteria.
𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗝𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗺𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘀 🍑
High-acid fruit softens tooth enamel right at the start of the day. And fructose, despite coming from fruit, is still sugar. No two ways about it.
𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗚𝗲𝗹𝘀/𝗖𝗵𝗲𝘄𝘀/𝗕𝗮𝗿𝘀 🏋️
Quick-energy gels, bars and chews are packed with concentrated sugars and acids. They stick to the teeth right when the mouth is already dry from exercise.
𝗩𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗜𝗬 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 🍋
Everything from lemon juice tricks to charcoal whitening is secretly wrecking teeth by scrubbing protective enamel right off.
𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰?
✅ Stick to three meals a day, give them their sugar (fruit, raisins, drinks) with a main meal, not as snacks.
✅ Ask them to rinse their mouth with water if they do snack.
✅ Make sure toothbrushing is done twice a day (before breakfast, and before bed) two minutes, covering every surface - including teeth at the back!
✅ Don't keep temptation in the house.

We were reminded of this 1949 cigarette advert this morning.

Summer is here and already we're starting to see a trickle of micro - and some macro! - injuries.
Micro:
🍫 Chips from biting on refrigerated chocolate
🧊 Enamel cracks from 'thermal shock'
🥵 Dry mouth from dehydration (less saliva 🟰 more bacteria)
Macro:
🚴 Fractured teeth from cycling accidents
🏊♂️ Broken teeth from swimming pool antics
🥊 Knocked out teeth from um, er, altercations

You really shouldn't wait for something to feel 'off', you should have regular checks, but, if you have any of these symptoms, it's most definitely time to give us a call...
🚨 1 Severe or Persistent Tooth Pain
👉 Could indicate infection, nerve damage, or an abscess
😷 2 Swelling in Gums, Face, or Jaw
👉 This can be a spreading infection - don’t delay
🩸 3 Bleeding Gums
👉 Early sign of gum disease, which can lead to tooth loss if ignored
🤢 4 Bad Taste or Persistent Bad Breath
👉 Often linked to infection or decay under the surface
🦷 5 Loose or Moving Teeth
👉 Not normal in adults - can signal advanced gum disease
🥶 6 Extreme Sensitivity (Hot, Cold, Sweet)

Recently, we've noticed that a large percentage of our patients are female. Some days, it's as high as 80%. Why is this?! 👭
